Tactile Communication and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory

Description

The Tactile Communication and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory (TCNL) develops theory and application of Neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to reorganize its operation in response to new functional needs. One application is Sensory Substitution, using one human sense to receive and process information normally communicated by a different sense. Another application is Non-Invasive Neuromodulation, the use of external tactile (touch) stimulation to regulate brain activity and enhance functional recovery. TCNL research has resulted in commercialization of devices to aid persons with blindness and balance disorders. Ongoing research is applying neuromodulation to rehabilitation of neurological disorders.

Outcomes

Improved quality of life and reduced disability for persons with sensory or neurological impairments.
